What if our clothing could detect the movement and emotions of those around us? How technology expands our sensory experience and influences our social interactions? And in what ways our clothing could become a form of non-verbal communication, expressing through a color and texture change?

Inspired by the Anna’s hummingbird’s gorget, IRIDESCENCE is an interactive collar equipped with a facial tracking camera and an array of 200 flipping quills. The Custom-made quills flip their colors and start to make patterns, in response to the movement of onlookers and their facial expressions.

The goal is to explore how our clothing could become an extension of one’s sensory experience of the world. Being blind or with eyes closed, not only you could hear where people are standing around you but also you could hear what emotions they are expressing with their facial expressions.

This project was commissioned by the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago for a 15-month exhibition entitled “Wired to Wear” opening on March 21.
