Creative Collective and Cojuelos Productions collaborated on a special event to celebrate the launch of In the Heights. The event included special performances, spoken word, and local art.

In addition to our business program, Creative Collective creates events, experiences, and opportunities for small businesses and the creative workforce. This event was important for many reasons including establishing Cinema Salem as a safe space for all communities, utilizing the power of film to create a sense of belonging, and educating consumers on the cultures featured in the movie. Creating opportunities for community inclusion and paid performances for artists combined into a powerful and timely event.

In the Heights: The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” invite you to the event of the summer, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... “In the Heights.” Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life. “In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.

In March 2020 Cinema Salem closed its doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Fourteen months later, the cinema is reopening on Friday, June 4 under new leadership with a new vision. We’re eager to get back to showing the kind of movies you've always enjoyed here. We'll also be presenting exciting discoveries from cinema's rich history and more recent gems off the beaten path.
