Monitoring the health of care home residents with Learning Disabilities can be challenging. Many of the indicators, including basic physiological data, may vary in this group. For example, a body temperature of 35C may be normal for some people with leaning disabilities, others may have unusual responses to pain and discomfort, and these indicators will vary from one resident to another.

This makes it difficult for care home staff to any possible deterioration in a resident’s health. One way to overcome this is to build up a set of baseline observations for each individual, to establish their ‘unique wellness’ and enable staff to pick up on changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This project aimed to determine if the use of Telehealth in a care home setting could help to build this baseline data and work with developing ‘soft signs’ for each individual. A first step was establishing the existing levels of knowledge and confidence amongst staff and then developing a training package, delivered by the West of England AHSN, to support them in taking observations. This gave them the skills to use the RESTORE2 tool to spot the early warning signs of residents becoming unwell.
