The 40,000 square foot Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is a dynamic and interactive museum in Springfield, Massachusetts. Eos Lightmedia created the lighting design for CambridgeSeven before supplying, installing and programming the lighting elements for the end client. As part of the multi-phase lighting design upgrade, the Hall of Honor, Feature Film Theatre and Themed Lobby Experience were attended to by Eos Lightmedia.

Upon entry into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, guests are first invited to walk through the themed lobby exhibit experience. The lobby is part of a concourse that has retail and restaurants throughout. After the refit, the lobby space was transformed into a walkable gallery with exhibit locker pods, displaying artifacts of famous names in basketball. The lobby had a lot of natural light shining through which needed to be addressed by removing a full blanket of illumination, and focusing in a highly theatrical manner in order to bring attention to the locker pod exhibits. The lobby arches have inspirational quotes displayed with corresponding audio. SGM wash lighting a LSI track system, Cue Server and ETC Eos Nomad were used to bring this space to life.

The feature film theatre seats 200 guests at once. An inspirational film, about the history of the sport and the evolution of basketball plays here. As the film plays, 1,000 feet of LED neon flex inside the walls are pixel-mapped to follow the visual gestures of the media on the screen, allowing guests to have a multi-faceted experience. Due to this space being a complete retrofit, utilizing the existing ceiling posed a challenge. A complex, 12-universe control system was programmed in order to allow this space to set the tone for the exhibits to follow.

The Hall of Honor is a 3,000 square foot oval highlighting the inducted members of the Hall of Fame. Each of the names are beautifully displayed on edge-lit glass. The walls of the Hall of Honor are grazed with Lumenpulse’s Lumenfacade on perforated metal panels. The Eos Lightmedia team set out to create an impressive experience to reflect the gravity and the significance of the contents in this space.

Throughout the project, Eos Lightmedia has dedicated a team to work along side architects, engineers, electricians and exhibit fabricators to ensure the lighting design was thoughtfully integrated at all stages of the buildings revitalization. Eos Lightmedia helped the client and the exhibit design team overcome many challenges on the project; engineering custom trusses, working with tight timelines, and value-engineering to meet budgets without compromising the client’s vision for the built environment.
