Geodesign is a relatively new field, involving among the sciences, the design professions and information technology and with direct stakeholder participation. Carl Steinitz is the emeritus professor of landscape architecture of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Honorary Visiting Professor at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London. In 1984, the Council of educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) presented Professor Steinitz with the Outstanding Educator Award for his "extraordinary contribution to environmental design education" and for his "pioneering exploration in the use of computer technology in landscape planning, especially in the areas of resource management and visual impact assessment". In 2002, he was honored as one of Harvard University's outstanding teachers. In recent years, Professor Steinitz has been instrumental in calling for and helping to establish a multi-institutional organization, the "International Geodesign Collaboration", to identify and share the lessons and practices developed by a globally-dispersed array of experts so that the resulting knowledge can be leveraged to solve the most pressing societal needs. Within two months of his call, team-leading investigators from 90 schools had joined the collaborative. By the following year, 150 universities in over 90 countries were participating. This may turn out to be the most significant part of the legacy of Professor Steinitz.
