For my final year project at Brunel University, I investigated language and communication development in the first 3 years of infancy. Here I discovered that parents played a vital role in providing an adequate learning environment for their child and that the quality and quantity of their interactions had long-lasting effects on the child's future abilities to learn, get a job and form relationships. Babies born with hearing loss are more at risk of developing speech, language and communication needs, as a result of the parent having no prior experience communicating with a deaf person. Using a family-centred approach, my aim was to create an interactive tool kit for the parent to aid them in providing their child with more frequent and natural learning opportunities. 'little eyes and ears' was my final outcome.
