About Anna,

You should always make time for outside activities at university, no matter how intense your university course is, believes Anna Ashcroft, a first-year student at Bristol University, studying Dentistry.

Relocating to Bristol has been an incredibly positive experience for Anna, a city which she describes as a great place for students. Nearing the end of her first year, Anna continues to enjoy the independence of university life, both in her studies and day to day life.

A typical day for Anna involves four or five lectures, running between 9am and 5pm, plus independent study and revision. To overcome the challenges associated with a content heavy course, Anna has found a time management system an incredibly useful tool.

Her favourite part of studying Dentistry involves being in a clinical environment, handling the tools and equipment, and practicing on other dental student, “it’s a great way to ease a content-heavy course and to get to know your fellow students.”

Currently a project coordinator for Bristol University’s Night Shelter, volunteering has always been a big part of Anna’s life and it is something she would encourage all Blue Coat students to consider, “there’s always something you can help out with, it’s so rewarding, and you will have fun.” For students considering studying a health-care science, like dentistry or medicine, volunteering “can be really useful to builds your communication skills.”

Anna’s top tip for anyone considering studying Dentistry is to build a healthy work/life balance, which is crucial for maintaining good mental health, “always be involved with something outside of your course,” to ensure that you can alleviate stress.

Her advice to all Blue Coat students is to, "allow yourself to fail sometimes, even if this seems counterintuitive.” Learn from a bad experience and do better in your next attempt, “but don’t feel bad and beat yourself up about it.”
