TEACHING SUGGESTIONS

This is a fun song that junior children will learn easily and enjoy singing. Discuss the title-what does the composer mean by two-legged mice do you think? Read through the chorus together to find out.

This is an example of a cumulative song where each verse adds an extra line. Another good example of this song type is The Rattlin’ Bog from Into Music 1 *(link to new resource). Songs of this type are very good “brain gym” for children because of the need to memorise the sequence.

Discuss all the different voices used to create an effect - children, female adult and character singing. The children could try character singing themselves by inventing a character and singing a verse in the way that character would sing it. The other children could guess who (or what) the character is.

To perform this song, children could illustrate large cards for each of the foods and one for “Danger Zone” and each be assigned one card to hold up at the appropriate time in the song. These cards will act as a prompt for the singers as well. To reinforce the cumulative effect, assign an untuned percussion instrument to each food type and encourage the children to play them in order.

Encourage the children to make up different wild and whacky food combinations to sing about, illustrate and create their own party sound effects to match.
