In the post abolition period many of the ex-slaves of Mauritius congregated around the base of Le Morne mountain, they brought with them the Ravanne drum one of the few traditional items they were able to hold on too from their homelands of Madagascar and east Africa. Sega nights were organized in different villages and camps within the landscape. It was under an old Banyan Tree that the villagers of Trou Chenilles gathered to tell stories, sing and dance the Sega on Saturday nights.

Sega music formed in the slave camps was largely improvised and intensely emotional and expressed the tribulations of a subjugated existence. It is primarily dance music but was also used for dirges and as part of traditional exorcisms. It was also looked down upon by the Catholic Church, which was not keen on its association with sexuality. Until the Mauritian Ti Frère became popular in the 1960s, sega was only played in private places. A particularly big turning point was his performance at the Night of the Sega at Mount Le Morne on 30 October 1964. It is now considered the national music of Mauritius.
