TEACHING SUGGESTIONS

This song is an example of the English music hall tradition, so English accents have been used to give the appropriate character to the song.

A tea-chest bass is used as backing along with a washboard and guitar. Children might want to research these instruments to make and play one of their own and also experiment with playing the spoons.

The verses are performed using rubato and children will initially have to concentrate well to keep the timing. Discuss why the composer has used this technique.

In the choruses an accelerando is used to create an effect . Children could play along to the beat on claves and listen carefully for the tempo change.

The children might want to create some verses of their own. Because of the nonsense factor they can have some fun with rhyming words.
