Burning Man is a community event held at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. It began as a Bonfire ritual on summer solstice in 1986 when a few friends met on Baker Beach in San Francisco and burnt a 9 foot tall wooden man as well as a smaller wooden dog. It has evolved over years to develop into a cultural community event. Everyone is welcome and the participants are the hosts.
The key concept behind this is that people from all over he world gather and celebrate with music, dance and art to remember their loved ones lost, to get over their pasts and to move on. It is a platform for self-expression of art and community participation. The various art includes experimental and interactive sculpture, building and performances. Innovative automotive art is a key attraction and people are energetic and dressed up all funky.
Their physical space is a temporary urban space, erected every year called as the Black Rock City solely for the purpose of this event. Their city is built around a spiritual temple structure where people post notes, pictures, meditate and offer prayer remembering their loved ones. It acts like a memorial for the lives lost.
The temple is the protagonist of story. We lined up our story line in such a way that the video is what a participant’s experience through the festival. It’s about how a person rides a bike through the desert, what he sees, how he feels when he is inside the temple, how the city turns into during night time and finally watching the temple burn to ashes and the rebirth of the next day.
The temple architecture used is designed to manipulate wind after recurrent wind simulations and calculations. The concept was raised from the research on how the boundaries of an actual temple are blurred yet placing the highest part of the energy is placed at the core. It has a central pier which holds the burning woman of life, surrounded by the three supporting piers, hell, heaven and purgatory. It doesn’t have a roof, indicating heaven as the limit. It comes with a concentric ring shelter as a space for people to meditate. The structure pulls in wind through its piers, making visualization of wind even inside the piers. Fire, particles and sand are used to indicate movement of wind.
This virtual space is our take on The Burning Man Festival. We wanted to express the cycle of life, to revive from your loss, to rebuild from your past and move forward in life. Hence, it is called Rebirth.
