あらすじ｜
地球が滅んだ後の世界、生き残った人々が興じるのは不可思議な遊び「ムードホール」。舞台となる不可解な空間もまた「ムードホール」と呼ばれる。あらゆる場所に現れては消える謎の中高年紳士と美女、巨人、そしてリトルピープル・・・。「ムード・ホール」とは何か？「第3種接近遭遇」「まぐれ穴の5人のまぐれ者」「ホモ・ルーデンス」「増殖I」「部屋」「ムード・ホール・ストリート」「増殖II」「ブルースカイ・フロム・ペイン」、8篇の実験的、芸術的、冒険的、半SF、半ミステリ的スケッチによる高密度の迷宮世界。

プリンスは言った。「（アルバム...って憶えてる？ アルバムは今でも重要だ。本や黒人の命と同じように、アルバムは今でも重要なんだ。今夜も、そしていつだって…）」（2015年グラミー賞授賞式でのプレゼンターとしてのスピーチ）　メッセージの本意とは少しちがうが、〈ミュージックアルバム〉は20世紀に生まれた、つくり手とオーディエンス双方にとって理想的な時間芸術の一つの形式として今でも重要だ。LPレコードの30数分から46分というこの媒体独特の時間世界は、私たちが時間芸術を享受する仕方として、時代の変化が加速しづつける2019年現在においても十分に示唆に富む。何より、複数のイメージの連鎖に集中し、予備知識と記憶、自由な解釈を織り交ぜ生まれる世界、（アーティストから送られたこのメッセージは私一人のために送られたのではないか）とさえ思えてしまうような至福の瞬間、アルバムジャケットを眺めながら流れる音とオーディエンスの想像との共鳴によって生まれる世界に没入するあの感じだ。音楽という分野には在る〈アルバム〉という形式が映像でどう可能か？　この問いに対し随分前から試みてきたが、『ムード・ホール』でようやくそれが形になった。〈アルバム〉と呼べる作品が誕生した。

プロフィール｜
カワイオカムラは日本の映像またコンテンポラリーアートユニットである。川合匠（かわいたくみ）1968年大阪生まれ。岡村寛生（おかむらひろき）1968年京都生まれ。京都市立芸術大学大学院在学中の1993年にカワイオカムラ結成。彫刻と絵画が合体した巨大なライトボックス作品などを制作していたが、徐々にその絵画的、造形的要素は映像の中へと展開し、1997年の初個展「オーバー・ザ・レインボウ」（アートスペース虹）では初めて映像作品を制作。また1999年の個展「四角いジャンル」(京都市四条ギャラリー）では初のセルアニメ《HOLY & CHEAP》を発表した。その後《ヘコヒョン7》（2004）を始めとして、デジタル・モデルアニメーションを中心に世界的に活動している。第65回ロカルノ国際映画祭（2012年、スイス）にて初公開された 《コロンボス》（2012）は、第53回クラクフ国際映画祭（2013年、ポーランド）で国際短編部門アニメーション最優秀賞、アルスエレクトロニカ・フェスティバル2014ではコンピュータアニメーション／映画／VFX部門栄誉賞を受賞した。川合は京都造形芸術大学芸術学部情報デザイン学科教授、岡村は同准教授。

Synopsis |
Mood Hall—the enigmatic game played amongst the survivors in the post-apocalyptic world. The strange space in which the game is played is also known by the same name. Mysterious middle-aged and older gentlemen and beautiful women, giants, and little people appear and disappear in various places. What is Mood Hall? “Overture: Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Five Flukers in the Fluke Pit,” “Homo Ludens,” “Multiplication 1,” “Rooms,” “Mood Hall St.,” “Multiplication 2,” and “Blue Skies from Pain”—a high-density labyrinthine world consisting of eight experimental, artistic, and adventurous sketches, half sci-fi and half mystery.

Statement |
Prince famously said, “Albums… Remember those? Albums still matter. Like books and black lives, albums still matter. Tonight and always,” in his speech as a presenter at the 2015 Grammy Awards ceremony. In a slight departure from the intentions of the original message, albums, which were born in the twentieth century, still matter today as a form of time-based art that is ideal for both artists and audiences. The time-based world of the LP record, uniquely consisting of thirty to forty-six minutes, is still a very suggestive means of enjoying time-based art, even in the midst of the rapid acceleration of the changing times in 2019. It is characterized above all by the world created by focusing on continuous streams of multiple images and interweaving your own knowledge, memories, and interpretations; by that blissful moment when it feels as though the artist’s message is meant for you and you only; and by the total immersion in the world born from the resonance between the sound we listen to while gazing at the album cover and the audience’s imagination. How can the album format in music be translated into film? We have been working on this question for quite some time now, and it has finally taken shape as Mood Hall. A work that can be called an album was born.

Biography |
KAWAI+OKAMURA is a Japanese creator unit of film and contemporary art. Takumi Kawai was born in Osaka in 1968. Hiroki Okamura was born in Kyoto in 1968. They formed Kawai+Okamura in 1993 while studying at Kyoto City University of Arts graduate school. Although they created a huge light box work in which sculpture and painting were united, gradually its painterly and modeling elements expanded into the first video works and the first solo exhibition "Over the Rainbow" in 1997. In 1999, the solo exhibition “The man from The Genre Mountain" announced the first cell animation "HOLY & CHEAP." Since then, they have been acting globally, mainly in digital model animation, including “Ficfyon7" (2004). "Columbos" (2012), first showed at the 65th Locarno International Film Festival (2012), received the best award of animated film of International Short Film Competition at Krakow Film Festival (2013) and the Honorary Mention in the Computer Animation / Film / VFX section of Ars Electronica Festival (2014).
Takumi Kawai is a professor and Hiroki Okamura is an associate professor of Kyoto University of Art and Design, department of Information Design.
