Love Song of the Japanese Cranes was composed as a benefit for the Sendai Symphony Orchestra after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami devastated the Sendai region. It is the story of two Japanese cranes that lose each other in the chaos of the tsunami. The piece features the Silk Strings koto ensemble with two soprano and one bass koto, and David Sabee conducting the Northwest Sinfonia orchestra. The piece was premiered at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Washington in 2012 as part of the Symphonic Stories concert.
