As much as I loved all of Jefferson Airplane's music, I can honestly say that my two all-time favorites were this song, "Come Up The Years," and the haunting melody "Triad." Three years before I would hear "Triad" for this time this song played on my black transistor radio (the same radio I got back in the spring of 1963 when "I Will Follow Him" was the #1 hit in the country) as I was walking to my cousin's house one cold late autumn night in 1966. Time seemed to stop and as long as the song played, I was absolutely satisfied and at peace listening and walking along the curb. I fell in love with it then and would always hold a special place in my heart for it as the years passed. The vocal featured Marty Balin and Signe Anderson in the only album she would ever record with the band, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. In any ways I prefer the music and style in the first album over the more famous LPs that followed with Grace Slick on vocals. As I said I also love Grace's vocal on "Triad" where she proves how truly great a vocalist she was. But it was back there in there one winter night on my first transistor radio that I fell in love with vocals of the late Signe Anderson without yet knowing her name (or the names of the other band members). They say "Come Up The Years" never charted, but it was always a "hit" with me and got plenty of air play by the DJs at WKBW AM radio who knew good music when they heard it. And a tip of the hat to another great local station, long since gone many years ago, WNIA.
