Dear Schubert is a physical entwinement with the second movement of Schubert's Piano Sonata in A, played by Mitsuku Uchida. Uchida describes Schubert as one of her four saints, a guiding presence, a miracle to make manifest. Through this dance the performer, a body with painted face and drawn on stockings, appears from another time, perhaps the famed Weimar cabarets, a Las Vegas concert hall, or a London variety show... they are at home on the stage, it is where they can think. The journey is intensely personal, ambiguous in its motivation, but clear in its emotional connection. It is an attempt to make communion between the composer, pianist and dancing body - each layer separated by centuries - yet infused with palpable subjectivity.
