. Ellis Marsalis was interviewed by
Marian McPartland on a January 2000
“Piano Jazz” program. In this illuminating
archive Mr. Marsalis shared how his
song “Syndrome” developed out of a
teaching exercise for a guitar student.
In 1974, he became the director of
jazz studies at the New Orleans High
School of Creative Arts. He mentored
contemporary artists including Terence
Blanchard and Harry Connick, Jr.
On the 2000 “Piano Jazz” program
he played a piano riff with rhythm and
key changes and explained how he had
the student improvise on that riff. His
teach riffs slowly evolved in to the
song in this video, “Syndrome”.
The scribbled drawings in this video
are like doodles like Marsalis’ riffs,
easy improvised ideas. They are not
profound or weighty, just explorations
for my own delight.
