My final project for BCM115 is a short narrative following a father returning to where he is from and reuniting with his son. This juxtaposes my first project, which followed the “day in the life” of my younger sister and was grounded in a single location. Both works focus on the same themes presented in my poem, a response to George Ella Lyon’s Where I’m from.
The visual aspect of this film is inspired by the “road trip” genre of films like Easy rider (D. Dennis Hopper, 1969); perspective shots and wide still shots of scenery that indicate a significant length of distance has been travelled and reveal an insight into the character.
To accompany these visuals, a combination of a voiceover, folly and an original song have been used to heighten the story; in particular, the opening sound of birds was recorded on location in Mudgee, indicating that the character of the father is constantly thinking of home and his son; a dream sequence visually aids this in the short.
