"Barbie's Be You"
The Barbie and the Rockers playset is proof of Barbie’s rich history as a pop culture phenomenon. Barbie is known far and wide and she is subject to varying opinions. Barbie’s Be You is an interactive experience that draws on personal aspirations of past and present. It urges museum-goers of all ages to reflect on what Barbie means to them in order to visualise their own dreams through drawing.
This experience is playful and personal, as the space grows through each individual’s iteration. One is able to witness a diverse, colourful wall of drawings that serves as a testament to Barbie’s meaning and presence, regardless of generation. It aims to cultivate childhood nostalgia and allow these memories to intertwine and create a collage of who Barbie is and what she can be. Thus, the ethos of Barbie is widened with this experience— she is not just a doll, but much more.

This design is part of the student learning experience in 87009 or 87445 VC Design Studio: Visualising Experience Spring 2021 in the Faculty of Design Architecture and Built Environment (DAB) University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and is not a professional design outcome. This project was developed under the guidance of studio leaders and demonstrators. As a response to a notional assessment brief, it is not directly connected to the Powerhouse Museum.
