This is the sky-filling aurora of November 3/4, 2021 that was triggered by a G3 solar storm from multiple coronal mass ejections colliding with Earth’s magnetosphere. The Kp Index this night reached 7 and auroras were seen well down into the United States.
I missed the main show after local midnight, but caught the tail end of the display between 4:30 and 5:30 am MDT. This video is from three real-time 4K video clips shot between 4:50 am and 5:07 am and lasting several minutes each but here edited down.
I narrated the videos at the camera with the built-in mic.
The first clip shows the pulsating or flaming aspect of the display, typical of a post-sub-storm aurora. This is the first time I’ve captured this pulsating effect on real-time video. Note the pulsing pink patches!
But then in the second clip more organized curtains appeared in the northwest. They moved from west to east over the next few minutes — the view is looking north with west to the left.
In the third clip, the curtains have faded, but some blue is beginning to appear in the eastern curtains, as they begin to catch the dawn sunlight at high altitudes.
The real-time videos were shot with a Canon R6 at 1/8-second shutter speed and at ISO 102,400, a little too high for comfort, but the aurora was not that bright. The lens was the TTArtisan 7.5mm fish-eye for Canon RF mount that opens to as wide as f/2, making real-time all-sky aurora videos possible. The videos were shot in Canon Log3 and graded in Final Cut.
The location is home in southern Alberta.
Editing is in Final Cut Pro. Music is licensed from AGSoundtrax.com
