I recorded this track as a play-along practice piece, purely for critique by my fellow members at scottsbasslessons.com It is not intended for publication, or wider circulation. It is not for profit.
I chose to play along with English Singer, Song Writer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Steve Winwood’s recording of “Back In The High Life Again”, which he released in June 1980, on his 4th Solo Album of the same name.
The Music was composed by Steve Winwood, in conjunction with the American song writer Will Jennings.
The title track was Steve Winwood’s 1st “Top 100” Chart Topper, 20 years after he first set out with the Spencer Davis Group.
Incidentally, the backing vocal was sung by James Taylor.
The Album went “Gold” in the U.K. and 3 x Platignum in the U.S.A. This title track made the Top 20 in most Western Countries.
I played a Bass line of my own creation.
I chose to play along on my ‘new to me’ (2020) Ernie Ball American made Music Man Sting Ray 5 string fretted Bass. I’ve only owned it for a few days. IO’m really pleased with its look, sound and feel.
I have recently fitted it with a new set of Ernie Ball own brand ‘Slinky’ round wound Cobalt strings, with diameters of 0.045 through to 0.130 on the low B string. They suit it particularly well.
I played this song in ‘Active’ mode via its onboard 3 band preamp. I set the onboard Treble, Mid and Bass controls at their midway setting, then increased the Bass response by around 15% to achieve a really solid Bass tone. The selector switch on the Sting Ray Bass was set in the middle equally between the Neck and Bridge PUs
I routed the signal via another new acquisition, my brand new Bergantino B|AMP Mk. 2, which is an even more recent buy than this Bass. I used as an inline preamp. I set the tone controls on my Bergantino B|AMP flat.
This was, yet again, a one shot ‘take’. I am pleased with the tone and quality of the sound. That was what I wanted to achieve. The only sound effect is driven by my fingers.
I sent the signal from my Bergantino B|AMP direct through an XLR cable, to my Focusrite Clarett 4 Pre USB Audio Interface, which is connected to my Intel i7 powered, Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64 bit PC. The Audio track was recorded direct on Ableton Live 10 Lite recording software.
The Video was contemporaneously captured, via my Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera, initially to an internal memory card, from which I subsequently downloaded it to my PC.
From there, it was It was imported direct to Corel Pinnacle Studio Video Software, version 21.5. I turned off the Audio track on the original video, captured via the microphone in my camera. The higher quality Audio track was subsequently added and synchronised with the video footage.
Enjoy ;o)
