Here's a simple idea. If you have neighbours working from home with young kids living next door, you can still observe Stage 3 'distancing restrictions' and start a 'serial reading'. It took us about half an hour to get through the first chapter of 'Storm Boy' with Noah and Amber from next door at Number 10. We stopped the reading once because Noah and Amber wanted tell me about Jet - the Wattle Bird - who visits their home a lot. Then almost on cue, Jet landed on my telephone wire and then flew across our ajoining fence into into a bottlebrush tree in their front garden. They knew it was Jet because he has a little orange spot under his chin. There are lots of intersting words in the first Chapter of Storm Boy like 'blunderbuss' and 'humpy' and there's a whole page where Colin Thiele lists the names of lots of different shells that Storm Boy would find on the Ninety Mile Beach. It is a bit of a thrill to scrape the rust old off and reuse some of those old primary teacher skills. Of course you don't need a teaching qualification to do this. You just need to be able to read and to obey the rules to stay well and stay on your respective sides of the fence! This was fun. Chapter 2 tomorrow!
