YouTube intro for the awesome Sammy Miller & The Congregation, a jazz group out of L.A. led by their fearless drummer and rounded out by a killer group of players. Normally a touring band, they had to regroup during quarantine and decided to focus on more online content. Their YouTube channel is educational and fun, as they improvise and play together between snippets about the history of jazz, or the basics of music theory.
I designed the band members' characters, drew them by hand, then animated them according to the various roles they occupy within the group. For example, Ben the saxophonist is often the "hype guy" during live shows and it's his job to get the audience up and dancing. So I drew Ben's character with cool shades and animated him popping out of Corbin's trombone to snap his fingers to cue the curtain.
The concept for this piece is "a mashup of Fat Albert and the Gang and New Orleans street performers and Sesame Street: Someone pops out of a bass drum, and someone circuses in on a wagon wheel, and someone is playing a horn upside down as though from monkey bars and each band member's got their own personality but altogether it's a ragtag band of fun homies with Masters degrees in bringing the all-ages ruckus who traverse multiple eras of jazz together in their custom-made time-traveling medicine show stagecoach which has now in this very hour made its way into your world and onto your screen, decked out in their finest PG-13 rated threads from the Burning Man gift shop built in the 1980's." (I actually wrote this to the client)
