We catch up with Rob Zettler, assistant coach of the Tampa Bay Lighting.

Rob tells about growing up in Sault Ste. Marie in Canada and just playing hockey outside on the ponds and in the streets with his friends and the fun they had.

He did play travel hockey because there were not enough teams near him to play so once a month they would make a trip for a weekend to play games.

At 15 years of age he started to notice his game improved and things came a little easier. At 16 years old he started playing for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL. He was paired with Jeff Beukeboom on defense. Jeff told him as a 16 year old he had his back the first year for the Greyhounds. Said he was a huge help in his career and his development overall. Some things that he was amazed at was the skill level increased, physical game, mental toughness you needed to play at that level. Terry Crisp was his coach and was very tough on him but it helped him in the development of his game.

Rob was drafted by the North Stars in the 3 round in the 1986 NHL draft. His first training camp Herb Brooks was the coach of the North Stars at the time and he only had one interaction with him which was a very funny story. He played in the IHL and it was a learning experience for him.

He tells a great story of when he got called up to the North Stars. Rob also tells us what it was like to play with the San Jose Sharks when they were an expansion team.

Another great guest here on "Inside the Game" brought to you by flexxCOACH.
