I admired Martha Rosler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen when I first watched it. I like the idea of how simple yet meditative her actions were. There was a sense of outrage in her voice but it is being paired with a Julia Child-esque show, mocking the structure but informing us the seriousness of a woman’s role in a patriarchal society. I wanted to do a similar idea. Take a simple format, like a cooking show, and layer it with a serious topic of immigrants from the Philippines overcoming some of the America’s expectations, stereotypes, and microaggressions.

I wrote the script with the advice from the professor, Mikko Lautamo, to write it with humor. I wanted the actor to smile throughout the performance, yet she’s also saying something meaningful and heavy. I also didn’t want the piece to be too lengthy. I wanted the script to be tight, coherent, and satirical.

When we did the rough draft critiques, I filmed it quick and the script wasn’t complete. I took my groups suggestions and worked on the final draft of the video. On the video I framed it better, got lighting equipment, and rerecorded the video with a different actor.

After the midterm critiques, I changed the aspect ratio and used the audio from our Zoom recorder, instead of the camera, so it can be a bit clearer. I polished the script and inserted some of the historical implications towards the Philippines when it comes to colonization of the country and how it impacted the culture.

Overall, I would love to continue this as a series of video tackling the same topic but expanding it, deconstructing it, a reconceptualizing it.
