Film lore tells us that George Cukor was a “woman’s director”. Regardless of whether or not he enjoyed being pinned by that title, his credits support this claim. He directed no less than 12 actresses who would go on to receive Oscar nominations for their roles. Ingrid Bergman and Judy Holliday would go on to win Academy Awards for work in his films. Cukor worked with Katharine Hepburn in ten films over a period of 47 years, an unparalleled collaboration in Hollywood. Cukor himself would not win an Academy Award until ‘My Fair Lady’, late into his career. Cukor’s early black and white films have an ethereal beauty about them. They come from the infancy of the Golden Age of Hollywood, when gorgeous starlets were photographed in diffuse close-ups that soften and glamorize their appearance.
