Did you know you can grow potatoes in a 5 gallon bucket? It's true! and it's fun! Kids will love this great summer garden project!
Here’s what you need:
> A 5 gallon bucket – with holes drilled in the bottom
> 2” of Gravel/rocks
> Seed Potatoes (These are Yukon Gold – Grab some ASAP at your local garden center)
> Castine Blend Organic Raised Bed Mix – Available in 1cf or 2cf bags – has the perfect amount of phosphorous and calcium to promote strong root growth! Plus it has Kelp meal in it for potassium…which potatoes LOVE!

1) Put 2” of rock or gravel down at the bottom of the bucket. (Helps with Drainage)

2) Add about 3” of soil over the rocks and place 2-3 seed potatoes on top, with “eyes up”

3) Cover with 3-4” of soil and water well.

4) Place the bucket in a full sun area. (They need 6-8 Hrs of sun) Make sure to keep the bucket slightly elevated from the ground to ensure drainage is possible.

5) Water regularly, keeping the soil moist, not soaked.

6) In the coming weeks, as green sprouts start to peek out of the soil, add another 1-2” of soil to cover them, (just enough so the tips of the green leaves are still visible.)
Continue this process until you reach the top of the bucket. (Remember, we are growing potatoes around the root system.)

7) Depending upon what variety you choose ( These are Yukon Gold) They should be ready to harvest in 70 – 120 days. A good indicator that the plants are
ready to harvest is to look at the leaf color. The leaves should look brown and a little faded. When you’re ready to harvest, simply dump the bucket
out and enjoy!
