hey everybody. great to meet you here at the yangon photo festival.

my name is ilkka - it’s a funky name from finland, where i am born some 7000 kilometers away.

yangon - when i first landed here 3 years ago i was impressed and inspired by the city.

i am just an accidental photographer, taking pictures when i see something that inspires me. in yangon i did - a lot - some of the photos you see here.

this city had gotten under my skin, and i started to look for ways to make a movie here.

lo and behold - my favorite book for many years, crime and punishment, fit into the contemporary society here with almost nothing changed.

here is mr dostoyevsky.

other than being a story about an ax-murder that is not so common here, it’s a story about redemption by love, which, i assume, is more common.

i found wonderful local friends to cooperate with, and we will shoot the movie in the fall.

wish me luck. i’ll need it when i venture to this next stage of my yangon experience.
