Before he became the "godfather" of American avant-garde cinema, Jonas Mekas, who had fled from Lithuania during World War II, lived in Displaced Person Camps, e.g. in Kassel-Mattenberg. During that time, he bought a lot of books and the Kassel library became his "other home". In 2017, he takes part in documenta. Since the artists and artworks of an exhibition like this do not only stand alone, but enter into a dialogue with each other, the words of Mekas, now 94 years old, are combined with images of "The Partheon of Books" by Marta Minujín and the performance "Spinal Discipline" by Irena Haiduk. For all of them, the emancipatory potential of books is an issue.
