I have seen a lot of loons in my life, and I have never ever seen anything like THIS! In this short movie, you will see a loon pop up out of the water with a fish in his beak.

And then..... completely surprising me, the loon jets across the water, belly plowing through the the surface and wings providing the propulsion. Half way across the bay, the loon stops center stage in front of me (maybe 50 feet away) and shows off his catch (I heard him claim it was 18" long, a typical fishing exaggeration). A very elegant bow, then he continues with his half-motorboat, half-airplane exhibition. I actually saw him do at least four or five of these noisy routes across this bay, always with the fish in its beak. A second loon hung around close by and seemed totally disinterested in actually diving underwater. Both loons appeared to be the same size, but maybe this was a parent teaching a baby loon about the joys of living in Grafton Pond? I would love to hear your theories (or perhaps you even KNOW the answer).

In any case, I feel so fortunate to have been able to capture it. I just wish I had my telephoto lens attached at the time. And in case you are wondering, I was not moving towards the loons at all, they came from the main body of the lake towards me.

The soundtrack is by the royal loon himself! Accompanied by some song birds in the trees, apparently enjoying the show as much as I did.
