I set out to make this short film as a way to deal with the male gaze on a personal level, along with the media’s portrayal of female sexuality. From the moment a girl is born, she is sexualized. The female body is historically seen as an object that can be gazed upon, admired, owned, and manipulated. In film, a woman’s sexuality is almost always determined by when she is having sex with a man, hardly ever with a another woman, and almost never in the form of self pleasure. Female masturbation in the entertainment industry is either used as the punchline of a joke, or the visual representation that a female character is at a low-point in her life. Self-pleasure is rarely seen as normal. It should not be represented in the media as a dark, and shameful act, when in reality, it is fundamentally part of the human experience, It is an act that allows women especially to understand their bodies for themselves, in a world where their bodies are consistently censored.

The process for making this short film was a bit complicated due to the amount of layering, but I have developed a method that works for me. At the moment, I use a combination of iMovie and Final Cut, in the future I will try to use iMovie less being that everything I am currently doing in iMovie can be done in Final Cut. I filmed my old television while I was watching some home movies recently, I used some of these clips in the video to help illustrate my artistic intent. I also filmed two individuals with staging, costumes, and props. I dabbled in making a DIY green screen and tested out special effects makeup on a fake wound.
