On Tuesday, July 9, local environmental justice activists and community members took a stand against Utah’s proposed inland port. A small group locked their arms together on the upper story, which houses the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce, demanding that the Chamber’s CEO and Utah Inland Port Authority Board chair, Derek Miller, listen to people rather than powerful companies.

In the action, they protested the structural racism that would be amplified by an inland port on the west side of Salt Lake City, which has a high proportion of people of color and lower-income people.

Outside, a crowd of people was rallying with puppets and banners. Children, grandparents, and people of all ages and walks of life joined together to say they wouldn’t accept a polluting port being built in their town. People soon began flooding the lobby, singing, chanting, all while taking care to maintain an open space for anyone who needed to come in or out of the building.

Two dozen police swarmed into the peaceful rally and, with no dispersal warning, began grabbing people, shoving them, putting them in chokeholds, grabbing their necks, and pinning them on the ground. The mainstream media has spun a narrative that suggests the protest itself was violent, but that simply was not the case. As this footage shows, people were engaged in nonviolent civil disobedience to protest a massive industrial project that they refuse to allow in their city.
