This week will introduce you to the field of comparative politics – what it is, exactly, and why it’s useful – and to the ways that political scientists compare. This week, our textbook authors Orvis and Drogus give us important definitions of politics, the three dimensions of power, and comparative politics as a field. They also make three arguments for why it’s useful to study politics in a comparative way. And perhaps most importantly, they introduce us to comparative politics methods – the ways that we as comparative political scientists gather evidence to try to understand a political process. Because methodology – the way we gather evidence to support our questions and ideas – is such an important part of comparative politics, this week we’ll also look at a couple examples of comparative politics “in action.”
