The goal of this piece is to create a thought-provoking view of Mass Surveillance in our society, leaving the viewer with an unsettling awareness of its intrusive nature in our lives. It uses cameras, sensors, speakers, and the internet, to observe, analyse, and highlight surveillance in our everyday lives, through the medium of sound, video, and data.

The centrepiece is a sound-sculpture which was constructed from wood, paper, Arduino boards, sensors, and speakers. It plays field-recordings and soundscapes at random through modified CCTV cameras, replacing the lenses with small speakers. The recordings combine and create a noise effect. Occasionally, elements within the soundscapes reach out and can be heard through the chaos. Sounds such as car horns, specific words, and announcements reveal some order to the chaos and highlighting these particular areas from around the world to a listener. These are presented to expose some the data and information being harvested by governments and corporations in audio form.

A feed from Twitter is displayed and uses a computers text-to-speech software to read a random tweet, from a chosen keyword, every two minutes (variable). This uses “Max 8” and “Processing” software in conjunction with Twitters API to access the publics tweets. This shows how easy it is to get access to online information as an artist, imagining what is possible by governments and large corporations.

Sensors on the centrepiece, effect a live video from the controlling laptops webcam. This displays a live video feed that showed the observer on screen. The sensors detect movement in the room and proximity to the sculpture. The sound of the room also effected the visuals on screen, through the computers built-in microphone. Again, this is a representation of some of the data being collected and is manipulated for artistic purposes by changing colours etc.

In a Gallery Setting these Visuals and Tweets could be projected on a large scale or use TV screens.
