To mark the International Day for the Victims of Torture the Irish Syria Solidarity Movement held a very moving minute's silence for the victims of torture in Syria. Tens of thousands are still detained in some of the world's most notorious torture prisons like Saydnaya that Amnesty International has called "a human slaughterhouse." The small but very determined gathering also called on the Assad regime to release these detainees many imprisoned simply for peacefully protesting against its brutal dictatorship. Over a hundred thousands are still missing rounded up in response to the 2011 peaceful uprising in Syria with many believed to have been tortured and or starved to death. As efforts by Syrians intensify to seek justice and accountability for these horrific crimes against humanity the ISSM demanded that the international community urgently take action to secure the release of the detainees still alive and support these efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
